Attesting Czech Documents (FAQs)

Yes - Czechia is a member of the Apostille Convention.

Czech documents can be legalized for use abroad with an Apostille Stamp when destined for other signatory countries without additional certification by the destination country.

When Czech documents are required for non-apostille countries, such as United Arab Emirates - Taiwan - Malaysia - Thailand - Zambia - Qatar they need additional authentication by the embassy of the destination country.

Submission within the European Union
Certain Czech documents do not require Apostilles when they are presented to authorities of other European Union countries (the receiving authority should accept the original or a certified copy).

When applying for certain public documents, a multilingual standard form may be requested to accompany the original. A multilingual standard form must always be issued and signed by a Czech authority, providing a translation aid designed to help the receiving authority to understand a public document which is in a language not accepted by the receiving EU country.

Czech documents not requiring Apostilles include birth, death, marriage certificates, absence of a criminal record (a clean criminal record of a Czech citizen), certificates of nationality and residence:

Other Czech documents, including academic certificates, still require Apostille certification and certified translation to be valid in other EU countries.

Apostilles on Czech birth certificates, death and marriage certificates are obtained from the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Certified copies of birth, death and marriage certificates can be obtained from the Office of Vital Records in the Municipality where the birth, death or marriage occurred or from the nearest Czech embassy

Submission within the European Union
Czech certificates of civil status (marriage, death and birth certificates) do not require an Apostille stamp when required for submission in another Member State of the European Union. For further information, see:

Czech Criminal Record Extracts (Výpis z rejstříku trestů) are available online through the Citizen Portal (with eGovernment mobile key, bank identity, mojeID). Extracts can also be obtained in person from any Czech POINT office (in Czech) (in Czech) or from aboard by applying to your nearest Czech embassy

Czech Apostille stamps are normally obtained from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1 - 2 business days

Czech University degrees, transcripts and diploma supplements are authenticated by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport.

It is possible to legalize originals or certified copies. Certified copies can be made by a Czech notary, municipal office or Czech Post, or by a Czech embassy
It is not possible to legalize a copy of a diploma that has already been certified by the authorities.

Czech primary, secondary and tertiary professional education certificates (i.e., school-leaving certificates and final examination certificates) issued by schools registered in the Register of Schools and School Facilities can be authenticated by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport.

Medical certificates issued in the Czech Republic can be authenticated with an Apostille stamp from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Prior certification is required by the Ministry of Health.

Certified copies of Czech birth, death and marriage certificates can be obtained from the Office of Vital Records in the Municipality where the birth, death or marriage occurred (offices of city districts in Prague). Copies of birth certificates for Czech citizens born abroad can be obtained from the special register maintained by the Office of the Municipal District of Brno-střed.

Czech degree certificates, transcripts and diploma supplements required for submission to the authorities of the United Arab Emirates can be legalized at the Ministry of Education (original or certified copy), then attested by the UAE embassy in Prague

Czech degree certificates, transcripts and diploma supplements required for submission to the authorities of Vietnam can be legalized at the Ministry of Education, then attested by the Vietnamese embassy in Prague.

Apostilles are not required when submitting Czech certificates of marital status to the authorities of another Member State of the European Union.

Apostilles are not required when submitting Czech Criminal Record Certificates to another Member State of the European Union when the certificate is issued to a Czech national and when the criminal record is clean (no convictions). In other cases, the recipient Member State may require an Apostille.
